Help: Confirm your telephone setup and modem port. As part of confirming your telephone setup, we need to know exactly what type of phone line you have, and to which port your modem is connected . Phone line: There are two types of phone lines -- pulse and tone. To find out what type of line you have, simply pick up your phone receiver and listen as you dial a few random numbers. If you hear a series of clicks, you have a pulse line. If you hear 'tones' or 'beeps,' you have a tone line. Once you've determined you phone line type, click on 'Previous' to return to the previous screen. Then select the button that corresponds to the sounds that your phone made. Modem port: To determine your modem's port, look on the back of your Macintosh to see where your modem cable is attached. Note the symbol, either a phone or a printer, that appears just above the port on your computer. Click on 'Previous' to return to the previous screen. Then, click on the symbol that represents your port. Finally, click on 'Continue' to move on. We will automatically determine your modem's transmission speed. Most modems dial at both 300 and 1200 baud. Some will transmit at 2400 baud and 9600 baud. America Online supports 300, 1200 and 2400 baud modems. We will automatically set up your modem to transmit at the maximum speed that we support.
